Surrender of La Turbie

The Spanish War of Succession had serious consequences for the Principality and the sovereignty of the Grimaldi. During the French occupation of Piedmont and the county of Nice in 1705, the king put Antoine I in possession of the lordship of La Turbie.

This enlargement of Monaco’s land ended the ancient conflict concerning the limitations between the land of Menton and Roquebrune, by placing the two communities under the same authority. The military defeat which took place at the end of the reign of Louis XIV forced Antoine I to surrender the lordship in 1713, with the treaty of Utrecht. More serious still, the Duke of Savoy wielded his suzerainty over Menton and Roquebrune, and in 1716 forced the Prince of Monaco to pay homage to him for the two territories of the Principality that the Grimaldi, thanks to the power of their Spanish then French protectors, had managed to avoid doing since the beginning of the 16th century.
