Monaco takes part in the One Planet – Polar Summit dedicated to glaciers and poles

On 9 November 2023, Ms Isabelle Berro-Amadeï, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, took part in the political segment of the first One Planet – Polar Summit dedicated to glaciers and poles, hosted at the initiative of the President of the French Republic on the margins of the sixth Paris Peace Forum. 

The international community (researchers, scientists, IPCC and IPBES experts, heads of international organisations, NGOs, the private sector, and representatives of indigenous peoples and local communities) came together to warn about the global collapse of the cryosphere (the planet’s ice reserve) and its consequences on the entire planet. 

The objective is to adopt the Paris Call for Glaciers and Poles, a political statement by which signatories undertake to act in favour of preserving the poles and the cryosphere by establishing Marine Protected Areas in Antarctica and banning the extraction of fossil fuels at the North Pole.

In her speech, Ms Berro-Amadeï stressed the long-standing scientific commitment of the Princes of Monaco over the centuries in favour of protecting the environment, and H.S.H. Prince Albert II’s attachment to the polar regions. She confirmed the importance of bold and precautionary measures to conserve polar ecosystems and highlighted the many initiatives and projects led by the Prince Albert II Foundation, the Oceanographic Institute – Albert I, and the Monaco Scientific Centre, which are making it possible to alert people to the urgent need for action.
