Visit by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC)
On Friday 6 December 2019, the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs received a visit from a representative of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), with a view to exploring opportunities for collaboration.
This international body, which is linked to the World Health Organization (WHO), focuses its research on the causes and prevention of cancer, in order to make recommendations on public health.
Following a fruitful meeting held in the presence of the Director of Health Affairs, representatives of the Princess Grace Hospital, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and the Monaco Scientific Centre, several avenues for collaboration were identified - the IARC's expertise could enable the Hospital to establish a cancer registry, and samples from the World Biobank could feed into research by the Monaco Scientific Centre on childhood cancers.
Additionally, the IARC examines agents and substances used on a daily basis to determine whether they are carcinogenic or harmless.
The Department of Health Affairs will be kept regularly informed of the IARC's work on electromagnetic waves.
